Dakota: Two! Years! Old!

Another year, another pack of white undershirts for me to paint. I like how it matters less and less if I’m a bit late taking the progress photos, I only just got this one taken today. Even though I’m perpetually tardy, I want to keep these going, and I’m think for her third year I can do a new one every three months. And then maybe in her fourth year I can do them every four months! Craziness. And undoubtedly in her fifth year I will just give up. 😉

But seriously though, look at this kid!

Dakota: Toddler California Winter Highlights

Time for a Dakota photo dump! I started this post over a week ago, so just pretend it’s the end of February still, okay?

One month until she’s a two year old, and we’ve been having lots of fun! We hit up the Exploratorium for the first time, which the grownups probably appreciated way more than Dakota, but there was still plenty for her to see. Here she is with a fog generating table thing. Not quite sure what we were learning about, but it was cool:

She may have loved the BART trip (traaiinnnn!!!!) even more than the actual Exploratorium, but she still managed to fall asleep for the entire ride home:

In more every-day news, here’s Dakota’s preferred coloring activity, decorating the sides of her “rocket ship” with chalk:

And we had a nice rain shower. So at least we’re reasonably sure that Dakota knows what rain is now.

Rain!

Dakota is starting to figure out how to actually play with other kids now, super exciting. It makes photo dumps on a public blog a little tougher, because I’m okay putting up photos of my own kid, but don’t want to post tons of photos of other people’s kids. 🙂 Anyway, here’s Dakota at an aweeeesssooommmmmee sea-themed playground in Sunnyvale:

Have I mentioned Dakota’s obsessed with ocean-related things? Thanks a lot, Octonauts. 🙂

And since this is a February recap, here she is eating some chocolate covered strawberries for Valentine’s Day.

In slightly more frustrating developments, Dakota is very NOT into sitting in the stroller or the carrier, making a daily walk for the dogs much more difficult. Sorry Loki and Alaska. 😦 Sometimes I can convince her to sit so we can go fast enough to give the dogs some exercise, but normally only if I let her play with the iPhone. That kinda feels like it’s defeating the purpose of being outside, but you gotta do what you gotta do. It’s somewhat easier if two adults are present, and even easier to keep he moving if we can convince her to “walk her dog”:

One last photo, Dakota continues to “help” with the gardening. Here she is trying on my gloves:

Dakota- Holidays for an almost 2-year-old

So I may not be trying for a fancy photo on odd numbered months now, but I figure I can post some random non-staged pics from the past month and maybe type out a few highlights while I’m at it. Sooo…..

The end of the year is an easy month for highlights, what with the holidays and all. 🙂 But first, it finally rained a lot in California! We got Dakota some boots:

Also on the more practical side, Dakota needs some extra diaper leak protection at night, so I knitted her a so-called “wool soaker”. Unfortunately it’s not quite long enough in the back to cover the top of her nighttime diaper, but it works great to prevent leaks around the leg holes.

Wool soaker

Back to the holidays though… we did a bit of a grab bag of things this year to see what traditions we’d like to carry on to future years. This is the first year we bought an actual tree, though it was only 3 feet tall and we stuck to Styrofoam ornaments. Dakota kept trying to put all the ornaments on the same branch, of course. 😉

We had a fun Chanukah/Yule dinner/celebration with some friends, dubbed Chanuyule. 😀 We made a delicious yule log cake… Well actually I wasn’t involved in the baking, but I enjoyed the eating part. Dakota is starting to get into wanting to help cook, so we try to give her ways to “help”, like mixing the dry ingredients. She is starting to learn the art of licking the spatula…

She was pretty into the Chanukah candle lighting too, and she could even more or less say “Baruch ata Adonai” (though not the rest of the song/prayer) along with us by the end of the week. She also enjoyed opening a small present each night of Chanukah, which was a good warm-up for xmas day with the grandparents. Here she is getting into the present opening; most likely at this point we were all egging her on with cries of “rip it!”

Opening presents

She really loved giving other people their presents (“For zhYou!” is my best approximation of what she says while handing stuff to people.) and “helping” open them. Here she is assisting Grandpa. She makes this exaggerated surprise face that I loovveeeee:

She got a bunch of new toys of course, (sigh) and I’m curious to see which will have the longest fun value. Unfortunately, we’ve already misplaced an early favorite: an inexpensive light-up bouncy ball from her stocking. You can throw all sorts of fancy stuff at her, but balls are still the best. 🙂 Sorry we lost you, light-up ball… at least I got a picture!

Virginia was a little cold (for us) but otherwise the weather was nice, so we ventured outside for some family pictures and toddler-tossing:

And we got to do some deer watching/stalking on multiple occasions. We managed to get a bit closer than this, but I didn’t get a picture that time.

I was  assuming that Dakota would be pretty shy/clingy around all the new people since that’s been her norm for the past few months, but she really got into the excitement of so many new playmates. I dunno if it was just new-people-overload or if she’s just generally getting more comfortable interacting with unfamiliar people, but it was so fun to see. Here she is playing with her aunt, technically not a new person, but last-seen in August:

And she really did great with traveling coast to coast, though it’ll be a relief in many ways (but not for my wallet) when she gets her own seat on the plane. I think she actually liked the shuttle bus ride to and from the parking lot more than she liked the actual airplanes. Here we are heading to our car back in California:

And thus ended our holiday adventures!

Well, this vaguely-narrated photo dump has actually been fun! Maybe I’ll remember to do it again in two months. Happy New Year!

Dakota: 1 year, 8 months

I missed last month. Too much fun to be had with Halloween and camping and all sorts of stuff. I’m just going to pretend switching to every other month is all according to plan because next month would have been a pain too. All according to plan.

Dakota: 1 year, 5 months

Well, I took the photo a week late, and didn’t get around to this post for another 4 days after that, but I still did it! Yaaaaayyy. I need some more fabric paint color options for the shirt.

I ended up with two pictures I really liked, so I cropped and white-balanced both. For now the one of her smiling wins, but maybe later looking back I’ll go for the contemplative one instead.

new shirt this month! I just rotated the colors, boooring.

She can kinda understand that I want her to stay on the fireplace, but she seemed absolutely sure that she should be sitting. I managed to get her to stand mostly by standing on the fireplace myself and then racing back to my spot and trying to get some pictures before she sat down again. Asking “How big is Dakota?” helped delay her sitting a little. It worked out nicely since this has been one of her favorite games for the past month, so it’s great to preserve the moment so appropriately. 🙂

And just for fun, Dakota thinks it’s hysterical to charge at me when she sees me with the camera, mostly because I shriek while vainly attempting to adjust the focus. ha. ha.

Dakota: 1 Year, 2 Months

She’s another month older. I painted some butterfly wings onto the “1”, added a 2 and an “s” onto the “month” part, and voila! 🙂 I could probably turn the 2 into something fun next month, but I think I’ll just move to a fresh shirt instead.
